J&K Students Association, here on today Wrote to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha urged him to lift unofficial ban on Student activism in Kashmir. In a Statement Spokesperson of Association, Nasir Khuehami said that a university is a highest seat of learning and the active participation of students in framing various public policies forms it’s integral part. Our universities and colleges are the only Institutions which help us to produce young leaders, engineers, Doctors, academicians etc.
But due to some circumstantial changes the institutions in Kashmir have tacitly resorted to such methods and measures which have hijacked the space for student growth and activism. Amongst these are the restrictions on free speech and student activism by the authorities.
He said that, student Politics is a part of education, & it’s where the future leaders, those who are young, honest and energetic are groomed. Our universities and colleges in Kashmir produce doctors, lawyers, academicians, engineers in bulk, but failed to produce leaders due to the denial of student activism. The unions’ and Associations’ have many advantages and play a crucial role in forming policies of the government in different countries. In modern democracies, the representation of mass in general and the youth, in particular, is vital so it is necessary that every citizen should own a proper representation in democracy which vitalizes the role of student unions and associations’, he said.
He said that, Everybody should be allowed to propagate their ideas freely. The interactions, debates, discussions, and exchange of ideas lead to positivity. The universities and Colleges in Kashmir valley has turned into a concrete jungle, where no student activism and research is allowed. There is no forum where Kashmiri students can voice their problems. Student activism should not be banned at the highest seat of learning. The student activism has played a very vital role in every field either in social or in political.
Khuehami said that, in Kashmir, we do have student issues and more than that of other Indian Universities but here the student suffer, his legal right is being always denied and he’s not in a position to challenge and oppose it. Campus politics is what brands the idea of a person, the maturity comes after the discussion and debate. However, the same is absent here and hardly have we seen any discussion and debate on political development in Kashmir, represented by students, he added.
He said that, the fact of the matter is that in the absence of a students’ Union’s and associations’, both the students as well as the administration suffer. The authorities also find it difficult to address a leaderless mass of students as they have choked their freedom of electing a leader to represent them. The UGC guidelines also entitle a student to form associations and unions. However, the callous nature and hardened stand of the Authorities in Kashmir have violated all these guidelines. Students feel the need for active student activism at lower as well as higher levels to raise their genuine concerns.
The university grants commission in its guidelines, on the rights of students, clearly entitles a student in any college and university “freedom of thought and expression” within and outside an institution and the university should allow space for the free exchange of ideas and public debates to foster a culture of public reasoning and questioning. Lack of students Unions in educational campus of Kashmir have taken quality interaction space from life of students of Kashmir, thus made them easy prey for negative elements, he added further.
Khuehami requested Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to urgently look into the matter and kindly lift an unofficial ban on Student Activism in Kashmir adding that above all the need to include youth of Kashmir into the the national political landscape, make then come out of the corridors of hopelessnes
